The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is a striking looking car featuring a classy and comfortable interior, and it’s available with a range of excellent engines. The diesel is particularly impressive, combining strong performance with excellent fuel economy.

Although there’s a choice of 3.0-litre turbo- and 4.4-litre twin-turbo petrol engines, the vast majority of buyers will go for the 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesel. It develops a mammoth 465lb ft of torque and generates a heady 308bhp. Unleash the full ferocity, and you’ll be staring down the barrel of an obscenely quick 5.4 sec 0-62mph sprint, and a relentless flood of power right up to 155mph.

So far, we’ve only driven Gran Coupes with optional rear-wheel steering and Active Drive, which uses electronically controlled anti-roll bars to limit body lean in corners. These help the car belie its five-metre length and substantial bulk in corners, while the adjustable dampers allow you to alter the ride comfort. It’s an effective combination, but it’s galling that BMW charges so much for these extras on a car that’s already so expensive.

It comes as no surprise then that the world’s most in demand electric violin group was there to perform for the official launch in Istanbul, Turkey.
